Why I CUT DOWN on Networking Events THIS YEAR?!!
Introduction:
So for those of you that were closely following my LinkedIn in 2023, I went to LOTS of different events last year.
For a variety of reasons, I have not been able to attend as many events this year.
As always, before we get into the blog post, please make sure to applaud, comment and share with your friends.
Happy Reading!
Reasons For a Lower Attendance:
Reason 1: Cost:
A lot of these events take place in the south of England therefore they’re a bit more challenging to get to. Sometimes trains and maybe even hotels are needed and this can be the difference between going to/skipping events.
Reason 2: Repetitive:
While there is clear value in attending these events, they can get repetitive at times.
Reason 3: Clashes:
With such a busy schedule, things are naturally going to clash. Last year, I had this issue in regards to external events being on the same day. This year I had challenges managing external events with university events, as well as with final interviews clashing (I had to miss the AWS Summit London this year!!).
Reason 4: Burnout:
This links closely to reason 2 but when you attend so many events, it does get intense.
The constant travelling and moving from 1 event. The ‘busyness’ of each event, the intensity is all quite strong.
Conclusion:
When I first started going to events, they were a great way to break up the flow of my current work and gain freebies.
Somewhere along the line, I kept going to more and more events and probably burnt out somewhere.
Events are great but my attendance must be managed in the right way.
