Ever Wondered HOW GOOGLE WORKS?! Here’s How !!!!!!!!!

Intro:

With over 70% market share, Google is by far the biggest search engine. In fact once, Google went down for 5 minutes and the ENTIRE TRAFFIC of the internet dropped by 40%!! That really speaks volumes about Google’s size and power!!

This is just a short, summary for beginners. I advise further reading if you want to find out more!!

History:

Google was founded by 2 Postgraduate Computer Science students called Larry Page and Sergey Brin. They knew that previous search engines had faults such as biased weighting and slow speed therefore they decided to create their own approach.

Page Rank Algorithm:

To summarise the page rank algorithm, it’s a directed graph where hyperlinks increase the weighting of a page.

There are other factors for e.g. links from .gov pages tend to hold increased weighting too!

Use of Machine Learning:

Google uses Machine Learning to guess what you’re thinking and to recommend different pages to you!!

What is Google Like Now?

Believe it or not, being a search engine is no longer Google’s main focus. Now they’re delving into Cloud Computing (GCP/Firebase), Machine Learning/AI and other areas. They have products in so many different sectors. YouTube alone is huge (that’s the 2nd biggest search engine believe it or not) and this spread means Google no longer has all of its eggs in one basked.
